Microsoft is planning to make the software development kit (SDK) for the new version of the touch-centric Surface 2.0 system available for download on July 12.

The Surface 2.0, which is being manufactured and distributed via Samsung (and is officially known as the SUR40), is expected to be priced at around $7,600 when it debuts later this year. The Surface 2.0 is expected to be thinner, cheaper and more versatile (able to be used horizontally or vertically) than the Surface 1.0 tabletop computer.

At Mix ‘11 in April, Microsoft officials described the coming SDK as enabling developers to create “write once, touch anywhere” applications. They said the new SDK will allow programmers to create applications targeting both touch-enabled Windows 7 PCs and Surface 2.0 systems, which makes sense, given the underlying UI inside the Surface 2.0 is Windows 7.

According to a July 7 blog post on the Microsoft Surface Blog, the new Surface 2.0 will make use of the same Metro interface/design language that is part of the Windows Phone and Zune HD, among other Microsoft products.

The new SDK will be released during Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in Los Angeles next week, and Microsoft execs will be seeking new partners there to develop Surface 2.0 applications and to sell the Samsung-developed systems. Microsoft is creating a new Surface Premier Partner Program to highlight developers who are targeting the Surface 2.0 system. Microsoft also plans to make available a migration tool to help developers who built apps for the Surface 1.0 tabletop to move their programs to the new Surface systems.

The Microsoft Surface technology is playing a key role in beefing up the security at the SuperBowl this year. With a slew of technology partners, a “command and Control platform” is being built owing to the Sharepoint, E-Sponder and Microsoft Surface.

One would wonder about how could such a technology aid in security related issues. The post at ArsTechnica described the role of the Surface as follows:

The tabletop computer will display a Microsoft Virtual Earth map of the area with real-time information about events, incidents, and tasks for the Tampa Incident Command staff. In this way, the security staff will be able to more easily manage the nearly a quarter of a million people in Tampa for Super Bowl-related activities. They’ll be able to zoom in and display a 3D image of the city, including detailed views of buildings and streets and real-time resource tracking.

Windows 7 Mobile is the operating system of choice for people using smart phones and many other electronic handheld hardware devices. As far as the operating system is concerned however, a delay appears to be what is in the process. Recent information obtained through a leaked document appears to point to the system being released for about another 14-16 months. This information, if true, would represent a delay of about six months over the figure that had last been given to the public by Microsoft.

Windows 7 Mobile in many ways is arguably more anticipated than its counterpart for conventional computers. The Windows 6.1 Mobile system had a number of problems with it, suffering from bloating in the same way that Windows Vista did. While it is not known whether Windows 7 Mobile will correct this problem, the leaked documents do describe Multitouch functionality that is far greater than anything Windows has brought to the market before in its mobile devices.

Theoretically, people with Windows 7 Mobile would be able to use a combination of their fingers and a stylus to input information onto a touch screen. They can use just the stylus, just one finger or a combination of multiple fingers to input commands and they can use gestures like finger swipes much in the same way that users of the iPhone already can. Additionally, Windows 7 Mobile appears to support jiggling motions, allowing you to shake a device or flick it to make different things happen. A lot of this is speculation based on a leaked document of unknown authenticity, but it certainly does present some interesting ideas.

It would be completely foolish for anyone that knows anything about analyzing the electronics industry to write off a product that Microsoft has created. If there is one thing the corporation has shown again and again it is that they can market a thoroughly bad product to death and make it into a good product through sheer force of will. The Surface is by no means a bad product in the absolute sense, but has been made to look bad because of cost overruns and a comparatively fantastic iPhone sales number. However, Microsoft has been plugging away with the Surface, getting marketing deal after marketing deal to the point where the Surface Computer and the Multitouch technology it carries has been recognized as a mainstream product in hotels and retail stores around the country.

Now, with yet another astonishing marketing turn, Microsoft has been able to market the Surface Computer to MSNBC for their coverage of the 2008 American Presidential Election. This coverage is something that is very much enhanced by the Multitouch display that has allowed people to touch places on a map of the country and then move votes to or from those places by virtue of dragging their fingers across the screen. The newest Surface Computer that MSNBC is using actually comes with McCain and Obama action figures, both of which are uniquely recognized by the Surface display.

With this kind of theatre you can only tip your hat off to the Microsoft Corporation that is really pulling out all the stops to make their Surface Computer as mainstream as possible.

Of all of the different developments that have taken place in the Multitouch category recently, it can be argued that the advent of wall Multitouch technology is definitely the most interesting. The wall technology has been created by Microsoft in an effort to make their Multitouch products more accessible for the average human being. After all, while the Surface Computer is a very impressive piece of technology, it’s not really something that would interest people outside of technology circles. Wall Multitouch displays on the other hand can be used by anyone including conventional desktop computer users that want to incorporate Multitouch into their everyday lives.

However, it appears as though Microsoft is not alone in their plans for Multitouch, although the competition this time around is coming from an unexpected source.

Newly launched Multitouch hardware company Multi Touch Incorporated has come out with a new product known as the Multi Touch Cell. This device is designed to function exactly like Microsoft’s Multitouch wall unit with additional functionality and a cost that might present more value for the dollar to savvy technology consumers. For this reason, it is quite obvious that the unveiling at this time was done so that Multi Touch could take aim at Microsoft’s product and steal a portion of the wall market away from the software giant. If they’re successful, it would represent the second consecutive loss that Microsoft has taken in a battle over a specific portion of the Multitouch market.

If you want to see interesting, then you need to stop by one of the Sheraton Hotels and get a look at the Microsoft Surface Computer in action. While many people were predicting that the Surface appearing in the real world so to speak was something that would not really pan out. People would find the table interesting, but within a few weeks it would be business as usual.

Well, there is a very good reason why that will likely not happen and it is one reason that nobody really saw coming.

Working together, Sheraton and Microsoft were able to create an application to be used on the Surface computers that inhabit the lobbies of the various Sheraton hotels. The application is one that turns the Surface Computer into what can essentially be thought of as a giant jukebox. Instead of choppy sound and crappy interfaces however, you will have the ultra-modern hardware and software design of the Surface as your jukebox guide. The result is a more convenient, better quality jukebox than has ever been created before.

Why is this good? It is good because one of the stated goals of this partnership was to allow people to play their favourite songs in the hotel lobbies of the Sheratons that had the Surface Computers installed. With the jukebox program this not only becomes possible, but easy on a very large scale. One doesn’t have to think long to realize that this could easily be the most popular use for a Surface Computer in a hotel lobby.

With all due respect to the Microsoft Surface and the Apple iPhone, Multitouch technology is not particularly interesting to the average person on the street. I know that it’s almost heresy to suggest that touch-screen technology, perhaps the most exciting brainchild of the technological revolution, is actually not really that feasible on the larger scale of things, but that is definitely the view that people have had of the technology for a very long time.

Multitouch technology has been around for years but it is only recently that a real fire has been ignited underneath it with people really thinking about ways to bring Multitouch products to the market. Whether that was the result of the iPhone, the Surface or something else is really irrelevant at this point. What is relevant to the conversation is answering the question that was in the title of this post.

And that question is simply one of the future of Multitouch technology. It used to be a niche technology that never had any hopes of really making it big, but now it seems to be transforming itself into a technology that everyone might be using within a couple of decades. Windows 7 is set to have Multitouch capability built into it and that is definitely something that will allow people the chance to buy Multitouch interfaces and try things out.

But is it enough for Multitouch to become a respectable and mainstream technology? That seems to be the big question, but only time will tell.

Microsoft has continued their campaign of bringing Multitouch to every person in the nation by signing a deal with Sheraton. Under this deal, several of the key facilities under the Sheraton chain will be getting Multitouch devices in their lobbies to help visitors with several different new features.

Sheraton hotels in San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Chicago and New York will be benefitting from the Multitouch-enabled Surface devices as they get installed in the lobbies of hotels in all five cities. These surface devices will be embedded in tables located within the lobbies and will be accessible by anyone that wants to walk into the lobby and use the computer.

Computer functionality is rumoured to be quite high as the people using the Surface computers will be able to call up information regarding the city as well as using the touch screen interface to map out routes and brainstorm different ways for them to get to where they are going. Additional travel information will also be available such as restaurant and activity guides.

Finally, people will be able to use the Surface computers available to them as modules for entertainment. They will be able to play music of many different sorts as well as show guests images of the city. In fact, there is one application installed on the computers known as City Tips, which is an application that has a completely circular view of the city. It will be one of the most comprehensive city planning aides available in the world today and it is something that Sheraton is already bragging about in their latest press releases.
